Temporal Lift Surgery

What is Temporal Lift Surgery?

The surgery known in the medical literature as Temporal Lift is a surgical procedure that lifts the outer parts of the eyebrows and the corners of the eyes upward and outward, giving a more dynamic, attractive, and youthful expression to the gaze.

It is applied especially to transform the eye structure that looks “tired, sad, or droopy” into a more vibrant and slightly slanted (close to almond-shaped) appearance. This surgery not only alleviates signs of aging but also adds a more aesthetic and sophisticated vision to the face.

What is the Temporal Region and Why Does Sagging Occur?

The temporal region is the area between the outer corner of the eyes and the hair-bearing skin. The tissues in this area succumb to gravity over time. The main causes of sagging are:

  • Genetic Factors: Familial tendency towards droopy eyebrow structure and eyelid droopiness is one of the most decisive factors.
  • Aging and Decrease in Skin Elasticity: As years go by, the collagen fibers that keep our skin taut loosen, causing the tail of the eyebrow to descend.
  • Sun Damage and Lifestyle: Harmful rays of the sun and smoking deteriorate skin quality, reducing elasticity and accelerating sagging.
  • Eyebrow Structure and Facial Anatomy: Some individuals have a bone and muscle structure that predisposes the outer part of the eyebrow to be held lower by birth.

Who is Suitable for Temporal Lift Surgery?

This operation is suitable not only for older age groups but also for younger patients who wish to aesthetically change their gaze.

  • Which Age Groups? Anyone with structurally droopy eyebrows from their 20s or showing signs of aging after their 40s can undergo this surgery.
  • Those with Droopy Eyebrow Tails: Individuals whose outer part of the eyebrow has sagged downwards.
  • Those with Tired Expressions Around the Eyes: Ideal for patients who appear tired regardless of how much they sleep and have accumulation at the corners of their eyes.

Differences Between Temporal Lift and Brow Lift

These are two concepts that our patients often confuse. The difference can be summarized as follows:

  • Temporal Lift: It only affects the outer 1/3 part of the eyebrow and the corners of the eyes. It gives a slant to the gaze.
  • Brow Lift: It lifts the entire eyebrow and the forehead. It also eliminates forehead lines.
  • Which is Suitable for Whom? If you do not have deep lines on your forehead and the middle of your eyebrow is normal, but you only want to lift the edges, then Temporal Lift is a more appropriate and minimal procedure for you.

How is Temporal Lift Surgery Performed?

The operation can be performed using endoscopic methods or open techniques; however, in both methods, the scars are hidden within the hair-bearing skin.

  • Surgical Technique: A small incision of approximately 2-3 cm is made from within the hair-bearing skin in the temporal area. From here, the subcutaneous tissues are released and pulled upward to be fixed in their new position.
  • Type of Anesthesia: It is usually performed under general anesthesia or sedation-assisted local anesthesia.
  • Operation Duration: It is a practical surgery completed in an average of 45 minutes to 1 hour.

What Should Be Considered Before Temporal Lift Surgery?

A successful surgery begins with a good preparation process.

  • Medications and Smoking: Aspirin-type blood thinners and herbal teas should be discontinued 1 week before surgery as they can increase the risk of bleeding. Smoking is advised to be stopped as it delays wound healing.
  • Examination Process: We clarify your expectations by simulating how much your eyebrow will be lifted in front of a mirror.
  • Assessment of Expectations: Avoiding an overly slanted (“alien”) appearance and preserving natural anatomy is our most important principle.

Recovery Process After Temporal Lift Surgery

Temporal lift is a procedure with a quite comfortable recovery process.

  • First Days: A light head bandage may be applied after the surgery. Pain is generally minimal and can be relieved with simple painkillers.
  • Swelling and Bruising: There may be slight edema around the eyes, but it decreases rapidly within 3-4 days. Bruising is rarely seen.
  • Return to Daily Life: Our patients can generally return to their jobs and social lives after 3 days. Since the stitches are within the hair, they are not noticeable from the outside.

Scars and Longevity After Temporal Lift Surgery

  • Are Scars Visible? No. The incision remains completely within the hair-bearing skin (among the hair above the ear), so even if you collect your hair, the scar is not visible. Over time, this scar fades.
  • How Permanent are the Results? Temporal lift is a permanent procedure. The effects of methods like thread lifting do not fade in 6 months. However, since the aging process continues, some loosening over the years is natural. Generally, it maintains its form for many years.

Possible Risks of Temporal Lift

Temporal lift is a safe surgery with a relatively low complication rate. Although rarely, infection, asymmetry, or temporary numbness may occur. When performed by an experienced surgeon and in the correct anatomical plane, the risk of nerve damage is negligible.

What Aesthetic Procedures Can Be Combined with Temporal Lift?

For a holistic rejuvenation and beauty, we often combine this procedure with the following surgeries:

  • Eyelid Aesthetics (Blepharoplasty): Removing excess skin from the eyelid while also lifting the eyebrow provides an excellent result.
  • Mini Facelift: While the lower face is tightened, the upper face is also balanced.
  • Forehead Lift: In cases where the entire forehead and eyebrow region are addressed together.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does temporal lift take?

It is a short and comfortable procedure lasting between 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Can it be done under local anesthesia?

Yes, it can be comfortably performed under local anesthesia supported by sedation (light sleep) for patient comfort.

When do the results become evident?

You will see your eyebrows lifted immediately after the surgery. The complete resolution of swelling and the settling of the final result takes about 2-3 weeks.

Is it sufficient on its own?

If there is no excessive skin accumulation on your eyelids, it is sufficient on its own just to open the gaze. However, if there is significant eyelid droopiness, I recommend combining it with eyelid aesthetics.
